A Distant Drum

A new book has been released by Frank and Nancy Prothero, honouring the more than sixty people of this village who served in the Great War, 1914-1918. The lives of those heroes who went to war a hundred years ago are described in detail with an emphasis on their family and community connections.

The Port Stanley Honour Roll lists ten soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice but research by Frank and Nancy proves it should be twelve and perhaps thirteen. In a rapidly changing world, it is important that we recognize the contributions of those who showed such admirable loyalty for their country and their way of life, a hundred years ago. A Distant Drum is a bridge to our collective past and our obligation to know whence we came.

This is the 21st book published by Frank and Nancy Prothero.

"There are many fascinating aspects of the history of Port Stanley that we would love to pursue," the Protheros say, "but most often we are driven by what should be done. When Joe McManus passed away, we published a booklet entitled "Joe" simply because somebody should have done something. Well, it has been one hundred years since our men and women took up the cause in World War One. We just thought it was time to recognize those volunteers."

"A Distant Drum: The Men and Women of Port Stanley who served in the Great War 1914-1918." is presently available at Port Stanley Foodland and other local outlets in the near future.
