Statement from COD President on Ontario Election
June 8, 2018 (Toronto, ON) - On behalf of frontline family doctors and specialists
in every corner of our province, Concerned Ontario Doctors (COD) congratulates the
incoming Premier of Ontario Doug Ford and the Ontario PC Party for forming a decisive
majority government. Ontario's frontline physicians look forward to working with
the new government to finally begin to address our healthcare crisis.
We also extend our congratulations to Andrea Horwath and the Ontario NDP on forming
the new Official Opposition of Ontario. And we congratulate Mike Schreiner on the
historic seat win for the Ontario Green Party - the only party to have attended
100% of COD's recent Candidate Healthcare Debates.
Having endured seven long years of ongoing, deep cuts to our frontline patient care,
five years without a contract, and attacks and vilification from Wynne's government,
grassroots physicians were actively engaged in this provincial election process
and hopeful for a change in government to begin to address the detrimental state
of our healthcare. Frontline Concerned Ontario Doctors engaged with MPP candidates,
wrote opinion pieces, held press conferences to inform patients, media and politicians,
organized a healthcare rally and held several Healthcare Debates throughout the
Greater Toronto Area for candidates across the political spectrum - all to ensure
healthcare would be a priority during Ontario's provincial election and that the
voices of patients and frontline physicians were heard.
We hope all political parties learn from the horrific mistakes and arrogance of
Wynne's Liberal government. Now the hard work begins to get our province back on
track, and restore trust and respect between the province and its frontline physicians.
We are pleased that the Ontario PC Party is committed to working with frontline
physicians to address our crisis and reduce healthcare bureaucracy to begin healthcare
reform together for the creation of an accessible and sustainable healthcare system
that truly puts patients first.
We look forward to a collaborative working relationship and I hope the incoming
Premier and his team will make time to meet with me and members of the COD Board
very soon for a frontline perspective on our healthcare crisis and for the development
of tangible solutions to provide the timely and quality care that Ontario's patients
deserve and need.
