Fanshawe fulfills Syrian refugee tuition promise

Ten families empowered to rebuild lives in London thanks to College funding

London, Ontario - Fanshawe College is pleased to announce it has fulfilled its pledge to support the City of London's response to the Syrian crisis through bursary funding that covers the costs of tuition and related fees for 10 Syrian refugees.

Thanks to private donations and fundraising efforts from the Fanshawe College Foundation, 10 refugee students have successfully enrolled and embarked on studies in the following seven programs:

  • Architectural Technology
  • Computer Programmer Analyst
  • Developmental Services Worker
  • Early Childhood Education
  • General Arts & Science (English Language Studies)
  • General Arts & Science (One-year certificate)
  • Retirement Residence Management

"Fanshawe is committed to providing pathways to success, and we're thrilled to help empower 10 new families settling in London," said Fanshawe President Peter Devlin. "The students' resilience is inspirational. They have thrown themselves into their studies and are all doing very well, determined to unlock their potential and contribute to their new community. We're proud to see them finding hope and building futures through a Fanshawe education."

The City of London began welcoming government-sponsored refugees in 2015, the same year Fanshawe announced its plans to support Syrians students through free tuition support. A mix of eligible male and female students began taking advantage of the offer to register in programs beginning in fall 2016 and this current winter term.

By December 23, 2016, the Government of Canada reported that London had accepted a total of 1,638 Syrian refugees.

One of the Syrian students at Fanshawe is currently helping her parents, who arrived in Canada recently, to get settled into their new lives in London. Another student, in her final semester of the General Arts & Science certificate program, anticipates graduating at the College's convocation ceremonies in June 2017.

Fanshawe College celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2017. Fanshawe is one of Ontario's largest colleges, serving close to half a million students with a promise to educate, engage, empower and excite. For 50 years, Fanshawe has been helping people to unlock their potential and achieve success. The College attracts students from 70 countries every year and opens up a world of possibilities through more than 200 degree, diploma and certificate programs, along with apprenticeship training.

Quote:

"When I first arrived to Canada, I found the perfect combination of diversity and equality, which made it easier to blend in and feel like I am home. Yet, I was extremely worried about continuing my studies in a completely foreign country. But all my worries dissipated when Fanshawe generously offered me the opportunity to follow my dreams and passion, allowing me to pursue my education. And ever since I started attending, I felt fortunate to be part of this loving and helping community, surrounded by professional teachers and cooperative staff. Fanshawe College is truly the ideal start for a happy and successful life." – Lynn Koudsi, a 20-year-old Syrian refugee, began studying Computer Programmer Analyst at Fanshawe in January 2017, after moving to Canada in late 2016. Her parents have just arrived from Syria, so in addition to her ongoing studies, she is also busy helping them to settle.
