Spitfires Over Sailors 54 In Overtime

On Sunday, December 2nd, 2018 the Port Stanley Sailors played their twenty-third game of the PJHL Regular 2018 - 2019 Season against the Aylmer Spitfires at the St. Thomas Memorial Arena.

Port Stanley's Anthony Pileggi (11), assisted by Austin Muscutt (3) made the first goal of the game at 3:17 of the first period. Three minutes later at 6:30 the Sailors scored again to lead by two with Tyler Foslett (9) scoring and assists to Brady Allen (2) and Austin Muscutt (3). Port Stanley's two goal lead was short-lived, just twenty-one seconds long before Spitfires Tanner Rickwood (2) took the puck all the way unassisted to make Aylmer's first goal. Aylmer tied the game at 11:14 on another unassisted goal, this time by Colin Spence (19).Shots on goal for the period were Aylmer Spitfires 14 - Port Stanley Sailors 14.

The Sailors went into the second period with the game tied, but came back from the break determined to put Port Stanley back in the lead. In the first minute of play, Port Stanley's wish came true on a power play with Brent Brooks (6) scoring and assisted by Derek Smith (10). The Sailors kept the lead for almost nine minutes but at 9:42 Spitfires Shane Kocsis-Cochrane (10) scored the tying goal with Noah Seguin (22) assisting. And again at 14:14 while the Sailors had a player in the penalty box, Aylmer for the first time this game took the lead with credit for that goal going to Dylan Vandersleen (24) assisted by Kyle Hopper (9) and Myles Carlson (7). Shots on goal for the period were Aylmer Spitfires 17 - Port Stanley Sailors 12.

The third period began with the Sailors down by one. Aylmer's game plan was to keep the Sailors from scoring and it seemed to be working, but at 13:53 it just stopped when Sailors Jack Annett (16) scored that tying goal with Luke Colafranceschi (27) and Liam OShea (22) assisting. The game remained tied for the rest of the period causing the game to go into overtime. Shots on goal for the period were Aylmer Spitfires 4 - Port Stanley Sailors 6.

In overtime the game was close, both teams were pretty well even, and the winner would be first to be in that right spot at the right time to get that the one and only last shot at the net to win the game. It's too bad that the last shot that got that winning goal in overtime, came while a player was in the penalty box, but credit does have to go to Spitfires Connor Richer (6) because he did it all unassisted. Shots on goal for the period were Aylmer Spitfires 11 - Port Stanley Sailors 12.
