Province Advancing New Knowledge to Strengthen Economy and Create Jobs

Elgin-Middlesex-London, October 4, 2019 - Today, Jeff Yurek, MPP for Elgin-Middlesex-London, visited Western University along with Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton to announce $3,147,526 in new provincial investments in local research projects, demonstrating the government's to making Ontario open for business and open for jobs.

"We want to make sure the people who are learning how to cure diseases, who are inventing new technologies, and who are creating whole new industries and jobs, have the support, tools and facilities they need to do their work," said MPP Yurek.

MPP Yurek announced local investments including:

  • $2,181,316 for 12 projects at Western University
  • $966,210 to Fanshawe College for an Applied Agri-food Innovation Accelerator for Southwestern Ontario.

Provincewide, Ontario is investing $41 million in 174 research projects through three separate funding programs. Ontario's investments are helping newly appointed researchers build their teams; making sure colleges and universities have up-to-date labs and equipment and supporting key projects in the field of genomics.

"Research leads to new knowledge that can deliver advances in health care, make our businesses more competitive, and lead to new products and services, companies and jobs," said MPP Yurek.

"We're grateful for the province's investments in people and equipment that will allow us to continue to make positive contributions to improve our health and environment," says Dr. Sarah Prichard, Western's Acting Vice-President (Research) at Western University. "These initiatives provide tangible benefits to our communities and to Ontarians' lives."

"Fanshawe College is excited about the expanded opportunity to explore new partnerships and support our regional agri-tech and agri-food businesses," said Colin Yates, Chair, Centre for Research and Innovation at Fanshawe College. "With diverse technical experience from our faculty and students and the brand new laboratory and testing facilities offered through the Centre for Applied Research and Innovation in Biotechnology (CARIB), Fanshawe stands as an accelerator for local and regional agri-businesses, providing the supports for product development and bridging the gaps at critical points in their production."
