Ontario Extending Senior Driver Education Sessions to St Thomas

Supporting Senior Drivers in St. Thomas and Elgin County

St. Thomas, July 26, 2019 – Ontario's government for the people is making it easier for seniors in St. Thomas and Elgin County to renew their driver's licence close to home.

Today MPP Jeff Yurek announced that St. Thomas Seniors' Centre will be the new location for a pilot project providing seniors aged 80 and over with local access to the education sessions required to renew their driver's licence.

"Our government is making it easier for seniors in St. Thomas and Elgin County to renew their driver's licence and keep driving safely," said Yurek. "There is a growing demand for senior driver education sessions to be conveniently located in the community and that's why we're piloting this service in St. Thomas."

"St. Thomas has many active seniors. Placing this service at the St Thomas Seniors Centre is a perfect match," said St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston.

Senior driver group education sessions will be held over a 12-month pilot period beginning in September 2019. The sessions help improve road safety by providing seniors with driving tips and updates on traffic laws as well as rules of the road.

"Improving access to senior driver education sessions will help save time and make life easier for seniors," said Yurek.

Quick Facts:

  • In 2018, the ministry conducted 11,701 senior driver group education sessions across the province.
  • 154,158 senior drivers attended a senior drivers group education session in 2018.
  • There are 120 locations in Ontario where senior drivers can receive this service.
