Children's Bereavement Program Coming Soon to Elgin County

September 19, 2019 St Thomas, ON – How do you help a child understand their grief and the depth of emotions they feel when they experience a loss in their life, especially the death of a loved one -- a loss that will affect them for the rest of their life in so many ways?

According to research, children have been an overlooked population for bereavement support services with many people believing that they did not need help to navigate through the process. We know from stories that this is simply untrue. With this in mind, VON Middlesex-Elgin embarked on offering a Kids' Circle bereavement program in the spring of 2019. The program has been very successful in both Chatham/Kent and Oxford VON locations.

VON Kids' Circle is aimed at supporting grieving children who have experienced the death of a loved one. VON Kids' Circle is an eight week program, providing group support to children ages 5 to 11 and will take place at the VON office in St Thomas – 175 South Edgeware Street. VON Kids' Circle will be facilitated by the Program Coordinator as well as specially trained bereavement volunteers at no cost to families, thanks to funding from the Southwest LHIN. The program also aims to provide practical support for parents and caregivers by providing resources and information regarding child and youth bereavement.

The inaugural program will begin on Wednesday, September 25th from 6:00pm-7:30pm and will continue for the following seven weeks on Wednesday evenings until Nov 13th. Registration is required for this program. For more information and registration details, please contact Becky Ahrens, Supportive Care and Bereavement Coordinator at VON Middlesex-Elgin – becky.ahrens@von.ca or (519) 637-6408 ext 222 or 1-800-201-0909.
