Best First Day aims to help 4,000 local kids

School supplies needed to send kids back to school with the tools to succeed

London, ON - Friday, July 19, 2019 - It's back-to-school time already and Best First Day is asking shoppers to pick up an extra backpack and supplies for a child in need. The annual community-wide drive organized by United Way, Thames Valley Education Foundation and The Salvation Army hopes to collect 4,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for kids from kindergarten to high school. Best First Day is collecting donations until August 12.

Anticipating the first day of school is exciting for many families. But for parents struggling to provide rent and food, the idea of shopping for a new backpack and filling it with school supplies can be a huge stress. For kids, having the right tools, from pencils to scientific calculators, is also about belonging.

"A new backpack is a little burst of joy," says Dawn Ruddick, incoming Principal at Lord Elgin Public School. "For teachers and educators, it's a symbol of hope when kids have the things they need for their learning journey. We don't want any child to be left behind."

Best First Day's goal this year is to collect 4,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for students in the Thames Valley District School Board, the London District Catholic School Board, and First Nations schools across the region.

"Thanks to the generosity of area businesses, individuals and volunteers, we can provide thousands of kids with those basic items they need to start the school year off right," says Kelly Ziegner, President & CEO, United Way Elgin Middlesex.

Want to help? Visit Best First Day to start a collection drive, donate supplies or cash, or volunteer. The collection drive runs until the week of August 12. Need a backpack? Students, parents or guardians can contact their school principal to request a backpack.
