London and District Labour Council

London and District Labour Council protests at MPP Jeff Yurek's office as part of a Province-wide Day of Action June 7 to demand an end to cuts after one year of Ford Government chaos and attacks on public services and unions

St. Thomas , ON - Ontarians are joining forces across the province to send a message to the government: stop cuts and privatization of public services that hurt Ontario families. Actions will be held on June 7 & 8 in more than 25 Ontario communities to tell the government that one year into its mandate, it is failing Ontarians. Three-quarters of Ontarians do not support this government, and on June 7 workers across the province are coming together to demand that the government stop cutting public education and health care, stop taking money out of workers' pockets, stop cancelling services for Ontario's most vulnerable, respect collective bargaining rights, and take action on the climate emergency.

"Enough is enough. June 7 marks one year of the Conservative government's devastating cuts, chaotic approach and attacks on unions. The majority of Ontarians did not vote for this government, and it must change course and listen to the people of this province. The labour movement will hold multiple actions across Ontario to resist government cuts and attacks on decent work and collective bargaining rights," states Patti Dalton, President of the London and District Labour Council. "The Premier needs a lesson in facts versus fiction. The Ford Government funding cuts have led to jobs losses in cherished public services like health care and education. We are also hearing that MPPs continue to cancel meetings with constituents, are not giving due notice of public appearances and have even called the police on seniors who were peacefully sending the message that they don't want cuts to funding for libraries. This is unacceptable in a democratic society."

Len Elliott OPSEU Region 1 Vice--President notes that: "The Ford Government's corporate tax handouts will total $3.8 billion over the next 6 years and means massive funding losses for public services. The solution is not to take a wrecking ball to services Ontarian's need but to require the rich and corporations to pay their fair share. Instead, the Ford Government intends to privatize public services like healthcare, again a gift for their rich friends. We won't let Ford get away with trying to divert attention from the devastating effects of their cuts with shameful populist slogans."

Events on June 7 & 8 will include teach-ins, visits to MPP offices, and rallies. Several events are planned as part of the OFL Power of Many campaign. The actions will demand that the government fund public services, including universal, not-for-profit public health care, high-quality public education, accessible post-secondary education, affordable housing, and childcare. and stop the cuts to Autism supports, Legal Aid and public library funding.
