Port Stanley, June 14th, 2019 - Today the prestigious Blue Flag was raised again for the tenth consecutive year on Port Stanley's Main Beach. Doing the honours of raising the 2019 flag this morning were Mayor Sally Martyn, Deputy Mayor Tom Marks, Ward 1 Councillor Colleen Row, Ward 2 Councillor Dennis Crevits and Andy Gates owner of GT's. People around the world look for the Blue Flag when choosing a beach to visit. The Blue Flag for Main Beach in Port Stanley means that the beach is clean, sustainably managed, meets safety and accessibility requirements and has excellent water quality.

The Blue Flag is awarded on a yearly basis and is only valid as long as those standards of water quality, safety and services, environmental management and education are maintained.

The idea of Port Stanley having a Blue Flag beach began from a vacation trip to South Africa that the late Central Elgin Mayor Sylvia Hofhuis took. She found out that in order to receive a Blue Flag, beaches must meet international standards in water quality, environmental management, environmental education, and safety and services. Having that Blue Flag designation for Port Stanley's Main Beach was an important project that was finally realized on May 24th, 2010 when the first Blue Flag was raised.

Behind each Blue Flag is a community of people who recognize the importance of protecting their beach for the benefit of the people who enjoy it and for the environment. The Blue Flag is administered in Canada by Environmental Defense and is managed internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).
