sample of secret shopper scam letter

Once again St. Thomas Police have been inundated with calls regarding scam letters involving a very realistic looking cheque for just under $4000.00 asking to be a secret shopper. As the saying goes: if it's too good to be true - it probably is.

It's not always easy spotting a scam, and new ones are invented every day. If you feel that you may be a target of fraud, or if you have already sent funds, don't be embarrassed - you're not alone.

To report a fraud, contact the St. Thomas Police Service. To find out more about frauds you can contact PhoneBusters toll free 1-888-495-8501 or their website at www.phonebusters.com. There is a direct link on the St. Thomas Police Service website as well.

PhoneBusters is a national anti-fraud call centre jointly operated by the Ontario Provincial Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. PhoneBusters plays a key role in educating the public about specific fraudulent telemarketing pitches.

Here is a sample of what the secret shopper scam letter looks like, should anyone receive one in the mail. A reminder to our citizens, never give out personal information to anyone over the phone unless you initiated the call.

Domestic Assault

In the early evening of June 9, 2013, a 37 year old St. Thomas female and her 44 year old male common law partner became involved in a verbal argument that quickly became physical. The female began slapping and kicking the male causing minor bruising to his face. The female was arrested later that evening for assault and was held for a bail hearing.
