The Boys of Summer brought the sun with them for the Season Opener Port Stanley
Seniors Softball Club double header on May 19, 2010.
In Game 1 the Sailors and Blues were tied at 1 run apiece through five innings,
with both teams scoring in the second inning. In the bottom of the sixth the Blues
had the bases loaded and only one out. "I knew we should have stopped after the
first," a Sailor commented. The Blues brought home three runs to take a 4-1 lead
heading into the seventh.
The Sailors scored another run in the top of the eighth but were still trailing
by two runs as they headed up for a final turn at bat in the top of the ninth. The
first batter up was thrown out at first. The second batter up was also thrown out
at first and then Pumpkin stepped up to the plate.
"It's all up to you, Pumpkin," Doug hollered. "Walk six times." Three balls, one
strike. "Nine more balls," called out a team mate. Three balls, two strikes. Strike
three and game. The Blues took it by a score of 4 - 2.
Neither team could get on the scoreboard through the first three innings of play
in Game 2 between the Pirates and Maroons. In the top of the fourth the Pirates
picked up a single, but in the bottom of the fifth five runs by the Maroons left
the Pirates feeling a bit deflated.
A single for the Pirates in each of the sixth and seventh innings, and another pair
for the Maroons in the bottom of the seventh put the Maroons in a four run lead.
By the top of the ninth the Pirates were trailing by five runs.
First batter fly out. Second batter safe on first. Pop-up missed by the catcher
so batter safe on first. The Pirates now had a runner safe on first and second,
one out and batter up. A solid hit down the centre loaded the bases with only one
out. If they could bring them in, they could turn this game around. Fly out for
two out, but the bases still loaded and batter up. A hit, one runner in, but the
runner headed for third was thrown out. The Maroons took this one by a score of
8 - 4.
