Gary & Barb Scrivens

Ever since construction on an outside deck for the upper floor at The Wharf started, rumours have abounded that The Wharf Restaurant in Port Stanley is closed for business, but nothing could be further from the truth ~ at least not yet.

It is true that The Wharf Restaurant will be closing its doors as a restaurant for good on September 30, 2014, but until that time, it is very much open for business. No weddings or parties already booked at The Wharf are in danger of being cancelled and new bookings can be made until mid September.

Restaurant proprietors Gary & Barb Scrivens are not leaving because they want to, but because the landlord wants to make changes to the building and its use and the September 30th closing is what both parties agreed to so that all weddings already booked could be honoured. "We were delighted with that," said Barb, "because these weddings are for Port Stanley people and we would hate to disappoint them."

"In 2013 our bookings generated over 2,000 persons staying overnight in Port Stanley," Barb said, "and we will be sad to see that go." But this does not mean that the Scrivens are getting out of the restaurant business, or even out of it in Port Stanley. Gary and Barb have leased the Sandcastle in Port Bruce and it will become known as the "New" Sandcastle. They have also leased the premises that used to house Off the Hook and will be opening a delivery and take-out business there, calling it the Fisherman's Café. That spot will feature Lake Erie Yellow Perch, Pickerel, Pickerel Cheeks, Cod and Shrimp, chips, hamburgers and pogo dogs and a harbourside patio. The Scrivens will also still be doing catering for weddings and parties.

The Scrivens' eldest son, Jeremy Stone, has purchased ME & Suzie's, taking that establishment over on February 1st, 2014. Along with his chef partner, Jeremy plans to open a kid-friendly restaurant. "We'll be a bit involved in that, too," Barb winked.

So the real scoop is that The Wharf Restaurant is open for business until September 30, 2014 and they would ask that anyone holding gift certificates for The Wharf to redeem them prior to the end of this September.

January 27, 2014 ~ Correction: Jeremy Stone and his partner have leased, not purchased, ME & Suzie's restaurant. Their decisions as to how the restuarant is to be run and its menu have not yet been finalized, and those decisions will be made solely by Jeremy and his partner. Barb and Gary Scrivens are not involved in the running of this restaurant.
