Highlights from St. Thomas City Council meeting of June 7, 2010
Waste Diversion and Curb Side Collection
The St.Thomas Waste Management Action Plan has developed a Waste Diversion and Curb
Side Collection by-law to reduce the improper use of recycling. Waste Management
Coordinator Michelle Shannon stood before St.Thomas City Council yesterday to discuss
this by-law.
The by-law includes a policy for private property owners to have their recyclables
collected. This is required to move the multi-residential recycling forwards. The
City of St.Thomas will need to discourage the excess throwing away of garbage in
order to achieve their 60% diversion goal.
St.Thomas Family YMCA
The St.Thomas YMCA requested free access to the Jaycee Pool for their members and
camp children, while their pool is under renovation for nine weeks this summer.
The Director of Parks and Recreation, Ross Tucker, discussed this request with St.Thomas
Council yesterday.
The YMCA has the opportunity to rent Jaycee's Pool from Monday to Friday at the
cost of $46.56 per hour. The maximum of swimmers allowed in this pool is 30. There
will availability for swimming lessons at a cost of $51.59 session. The camp children
will have to access to public swimming at the approved cost of $2.25 per swim.
Canada Day Celebrations
After the 2009 Canada Day fireworks display, fireworks were no longer permitted
in Pinafore Park due to Fire Regulations. The Canada Day Committee has decided to
host the 2010 Canada Day celebrations at the D.J. Tarry Complex. The festivities
will consist of the Kinsmen Club beer garden, kid's junction, Art Centre display
for children, non-profit food vendors, craft vendors, and live entertainment. The
fireworks display will take place at 10 p.m. with the approval of Central Elgin.
