 Yurek Launches FRO Petition
Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Jeff Yurek

Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Jeff Yurek launched a petition on February 21, 2014, calling on the government to strike an all-party select committee to review and make recommendations to enhance the efficiency of the Family Responsibility Office. From 2010 to 2013, FRO-related complaints to the Ombudsman rose from 716 to 794. Yurek noted his office deals with a large portion of FRO cases and it is clear that there's room for improvements.

"Since I took office, FRO cases have been some of the more challenging for our office," said MPP Yurek. "Our goal is to resolve cases that come to our office as quickly and effectively as possible. However, as my office has dealt with more and more cases, it's clear that the system is not as efficient or effective as it could be."

A CTV report in August noted that 135,000 support payments cases are in arrears, with a total of $2 billion in payments in outstanding. That figure is up $500 million in the past three years. While outstanding payments pose big challenges to single parents, many examples of overpayment have also been reported. Incorrect payments divert numerous man-hours and resources in order to correct. This costs the system and ties up caseworkers.

"If we can explore ideas to enhance the operations at FRO, more parents will receive the correct payment amounts on time. That's the purpose of FRO and we need to ensure that it's fulfilled."
