Vintage jeeps parked by the Legion
The perfect summer weather of August 17, 2013 brought out a number of beautifully
restored and fully functioning vintage vehicles to buzz the village streets of Port
The first one to catch my eye was a bright yellow Ford, complete with rumble seat
and "Lost in Time" licence plates. The very pleaseant couple who owned the car readily
answered questions from curious passers-by. It had a quiet purr when the driver
fired it up and set it in motion. Next I spotted a green convertible that brought
to mind the "Untouchables" movie and gangster era.
Later, when turning onto Carlow Road, I had to wait while a small parade of what
looked to be war time vintage jeeps passed, bringing to mind images from movies
about Montgomery's Desert Rats and Saving Private Ryan. They pulled
up at the Legion. Their leader, Roman Catholic priest Mark Sargent, curtly said
they were just there for a social time and not available for any kind of comment
in any sort of news story. The most information he would share was that each of
these vintage jeeps was privately owned. ("Intrepid" rides again.)
My last visual treat of the day was a bright blue Morgan parked outside The Roxy.
