Update: July 29, 2014: Police have identified the young male that went missing after going swimming off the main beach in Port Burwell over the weekend, and after three days of searching they have recovered his body. Elgin County OPP wishes to thank all those that assisted with the search.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. July 27, 2014 Elgin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Bayham Fire and Elgin-St. Thomas Emergency Medical Services responded to a report of a missing swimmer in Port Burwell. A group of youths were swimming out by the pier on the main beach in Port Burwell when they came to a deeper section of the water. One male youth began to struggle and went under water and the others were having difficulty in the water. When the group was pulled to safety, it was discovered the one youth was missing. The missing youth, 15 year old Peter HILDEBRANDT of Malahide Township is presumed to have drowned.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Underwater Search and Recovery Unit will be resuming their recovery efforts today with the assistance of Elgin County OPP, Central Elgin Fire and Bayham Fire Services.

Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is currently on scene for an investigation involving a missing swimmer at the main beach in Port Burwell, Bayham Township, Ontario.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. July 27, 2014 Elgin OPP, Bayham Fire and Elgin-St. Thomas Emergency Medical Services responded to a report of a missing swimmer in Port Burwell. Police have learned that a group of youths were swimming out by the pier on the main beach in Port Burwell when they came to a deeper section of the water. One male youth began to struggle and went under water and the others were having difficulty in the water. When the group made it to shore, it was discovered the one youth had not returned.

A search was conducted but was discontinued later due to weather and water conditions. The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit is engaged to assist with the search.

Missing is a 15 year old male from Malahide Township.
