Queen's Park: In another blunder for the Liberal government, a series of
documents related to the long-anticipated provincial budget were released this week.
They outlined what the PC Caucus has been saying for months: spending under this
government is going up.
The documents revealed that this year's budget would contain an additional $5.7
billion in spending. MPP Jeff Yurek said he wasn't surprised. "I've been here for
two years and while we've preached prudence and respect for taxpayer dollars, this
government has continued their high-spending ways unabated."
The documents included the government's budgetary communications plan which outlines
a number of 'feel-good' announcements leading up to the budget. The roll-out of
this plan, as indicated by internal Liberal documents, is to be carried out by a
taskforce dubbed "The B.L.T." or the "Budget Leaking Team."
The Liberals could not explain how the documents got out but PC Finance Critic Vic
Fedeli said he was given the documents by senior civil servants. These bureaucrats
decided to hand the documents over to the opposition.
"I think it speaks to the path our province is on," said Yurek. "Ontario is already
compared unfavourably to the likes of California in terms of fiscal management.
With billions in additional spending, I think it's no surprise that some bureaucrats
have come forward to let the public know how much deeper in debt we're going."
