St. Thomas, ON: In partnership with the St. Thomas Economic Development Corporation and the County of Elgin Economic Development and Tourism Services Department, Member of Parliament Joe Preston welcomed local manufacturers and the In Situ Oil Sands Alliance Wednesday at the St. Thomas Golf and Country Club.

The opportunity for local manufacturers to work in conjunction with Alberta businesses was initiated by MP Preston following a conversation with his colleague MP James Rajotte of Edmonton-Leduc. MP Rajotte discussed with Preston the challenges faced by companies in Alberta, including production wait-times.

"Canada is recovering very well from the global economic downturn. Our biggest challenge is that the jobs have not necessarily returned to the regions they were lost," said Preston. "Meetings like this allow us to offer the expertise of Southern Ontario to other parts of Canada."

Over 40 representatives of manufacturers from throughout the County of Elgin and the City of St Thomas had the opportunity to meet with emerging in situ oil sands developers to find and discuss synergies between the local economies in Ontario and the needs of energy producers in Alberta. The goal was to facilitate partnerships that will result in economic growth and prosperity in both our region and Alberta.
