Winning team: Mike Kyle, Rick Elrick, Bob Stafford, Bill Cochrane

The team that won second place in 2013 proudly claimed first place in the Port Stanley Legion's 2014 Poppy Open fundraising golf tournament held August 9, 2014 at the Kettle Creek Golf & Country Club. Mike Kyle, Rick Elrick, Bob Stafford, Bill Cochrane were all smiles as they held up the plaque bearing the now-permanent record of their win.

The competition was kept somewhat in-house this year as organizers gave first right of refusal by e-mail to all the teams who participated in the Poppy Open last year before opening up the tournament registration on June 30th. It was all booked except for 4 teams and once they opened it up to new golfers, it sold out the first day. This year's winners, Team 2, were determined to beat last year's winning team of Janice & Rich McClenaghan and Ron & Sherry Trowhill in this Scramble format - and they did, dropping the McClenaghan team into second place.

Once again the tournament received tremendous community support from businesses, groups and individuals as as tournament and hole sponsors, in prize donations, and even in donations to the dinner. A five-foot long commercial barbeque was donated to the Legion so that the tournament dinner could be cooked and served quicker than last year.

Although small, the Port Stanley Legion is one of the most successful legions in the county and this year's Poppy Open raised approximately $3,600 for the Poppy Fund - a charitable fund that is used to directly help veterans. Organizer Terry Campbell pointed out how the Port Stanley Legion is truly a focal point of the community and encouraged people to become actively involved by volunteering to help at the Legion.

Everyone had a good time at the tournament and the dinner, and the Poppy Fund is substantially healthier. The Legion would like to thank everyone who supported the tournament and who came out to play in it - and they'll do this all again next year! We would also like to give a very special thank you to Paul Dilworth, the Chair of The Poppy Open organizing committee and the initial spark plug for The Poppy Open.
