First of all I would like to thank everyone who signed the petition against the
proposed heritage district in Port Stanley, Ontario. We received over 175 signatures
on the Labour Day weekend, just 4 short days!
After speaking with Councilor McNeil, the petitions were handed in to Chandra at
the Municipality on September 3, 2013. Along with these signatures there were numerous
letters from concerned citizens that were included with these signatures.
I think it is quite apparent that the populace has spoken.
Regardless of this fact, very little has been done with these signatures - no meetings,
nothing! After speaking with Chandra at the municipality this morning, it appears
that there will be meetings with the consultants scheduled in late October to revamp
the proposed heritage district plan.
It is a personal matter. If you want your property deemed "heritage", there are
guidelines already in place so you can do it without infringing on the rights of
your neighbours. They keep telling us that our taxes will not increase ... but you
can bet they will! After all, how are we, the taxpayers, going to pay for the heritage
The writing is on the wall: Councillor Sally Martyn is bound and determined to turn
this sweet little town into another Sparta. The few businesses that exist there
are lucky to have two busloads of seniors arrive on a Sunday afternoon to have high
tea and buy a candle or two.
Why aren't we concentrating on more pressing issues, like getting the contamination
cleaned up on the berm, or getting more business into Port Stanley, or at least
keeping what little business we have left here?
Absolute Nonsense! Private interests have every intent of pushing
this ridiculousness through, regardless of what we think about it.
We are losing our basic right to choose. Can we even vote on this issue? ... NO!
Time to wake up, Port Stanley ... before it's too late!
