"Here we go again." Every year at this time we all get our final tax bill and every
year I say to myself don't get upset, and every year I do.
It is always accompanied by the fancy brochure telling us all about our taxes. This
is helpful in determining what we pay, and I appreciate that. What I don't appreciate
are the statements which say Central Elgin has no control over the tax levy set
by the County of Elgin or the province of Ontario education levy.
The last time I checked, we have representation with both organizations, and I certainly
hope that they are doing the job they were sent there to do. I would like to see
more info on what these people actually do and say, as it is these people who are
looking out for our interests.
Then we have the provincially mandated programs which, through different organizations
the municipality belongs to, they are suppose to voice our concerns at that level.
If we continue to let all these other interests dictate our taxes, we soon could
just get rid of our local folks, as we no longer will need them.
Then we have the statement every year,"WE LOWERED OUR TAXES, it is not us, it is
those other bad guys." And sure enough, the tax rate or mill rate or what ever they
call it now, was lowered, and sure enough my municipal portion did go down.
Well guess what folks, as you know and I know, the cheque I make out goes to Central
Elgin, and it is more money again. Here again they will say "it is not us,
it is MPAC." Well the municipality knows how much revenue they are going to get
from assessment increases each and every year, so they are being hypocritical saying
such a thing.
My assessment has risen every year since it started in 2008 with MPAC, and will
do so until 2016. Then they will do a new assessment, and it will continue to go
up, and this is our tax increase, and Central Elgin gets the money.
So I wish they would stop saying we are not raising taxes. My taxes have
increased by some 35% over the last eight years, so don't tell me you are not raising
my taxes. Just an observation.
