Bingo Ladies is the most delightful farce I've seen in decades. You'll be
singing along to lyrics you don't even know, and fall in love with the most crotchety
old woman to hit the stage in two centuries.
The world premier of this musical comedy opened to a full house on the Port Stanley
Festival Theatre stage July 10, 2014. The book, music and lyrics were written by
Grant Tilly, a charming young man who fell in love with his own characters - and
what characters they are! Eric Bunnell's mastery in set design once again transformed
that drab little stage into the perfect backdrop for these characters to sing out
their stories - and Liz Gilroy's natural comedic sense of timing choreographed and
directed this production into perfect delivery.
Mark Allen is "Lou", the Hard Cover Rock Star turned bingo caller - need I say more?
Laura Caswell is delightful as the oh-so-nice wallflower and gentleman-bingo-caller
groupie. Who'd have thought she could develop so much spunk? Lisa Horner you know,
you've seen her in the IKEA commercials, but she is priceless as the gambling addict
in hawk up to her eyeballs. But the one I fell in love with was Mary Pitt as the
crotchety old Queen of the Bingo Hall. Tilly's lyrics tell the story as punch lines
put to music - audacious, bitingly honest, and hilariously funny!
If you're going to do yourself one favour this summer, make it taking in a performance
of Bingo Ladies - you'll laugh till your sides hurt. Bingo Ladies
plays until July 26th, 2014.
